That means she forgave you already.

Like I said before.

You are one lucky son of a gun.

Chapter Twelve

It was late morning when Chloe startled awake in Deke’s bed to the sound of her chirping cell phone. She sat up, noted she was alone again, and retrieved her phone from across the room where her clothing had ended up.

“Hello.”

“It’s Justine. Are you sure you can’t make it to the open house today? Not even for a few minutes?”

Chloe would love to sneak away, if only to take the heat off of Deke for a couple of hours. Plus, if the house sold while Justine was there, Chloe’s commission would be considerably less.

“Why? Has something come up?” She glanced across the room at the clock on the nightstand. The open house was scheduled to start in about two hours.

She walked to the bedroom doors and out into the hallway. She stepped to the end of the upstairs bridge across the house and looked down toward the kitchen, hoping to catch a glimpse of Deke. Was he cooking breakfast again? Or lunch?

She didn’t hear anything. More specifically, she didn’t smell anything good coming from the kitchen area. Where was he?

On the line, Justine said, “Not exactly. I just don’t like working on the weekends.”

Chloe swallowed the words of apology she was about to express and said, “It can’t be helped.”

“If I get a firm offer today that goes through to closing, it means the commission will be mine.” Justine’s tone had gone hard.

“I know, but I still get a percentage as the listing agent,” Chloe said, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. She hated giving over any extra part of her hard-earned income to Justine. Plus, she owed it to her clients to ensure their best interests were taken care of.

“Not as much. And there is something else for you to consider. Any new business created while I’m there would also be mine.”

What the hell? “What new business? What are you talking about?”

“Mr. Henderson called the office looking for you earlier. He wanted to make sure you’d be at the open house. I told him I didn’t think you’d make it. He sounded disappointed, but mentioned a new house search he wanted to discuss with you.”

Chloe sighed, deeply upset she might miss out on an opportunity for Edgar Henderson’s further real-estate business. The rich widower had been new to the area when he’d hired her last year to find him a house.

She’d spent an exhaustive amount of time locating the perfect home for him. He’d been so happy with her services and the final result, he’d given her a generous Christmas present. He’d also stopped by Premier Housing to visit her a few times, telling her he was about to be shopping for a second home as soon he sold a place he had in his former home town. That was probably what he’d told Justine about.

Chloe narrowed her eyes. “If Mr. Henderson stops by, he may only want me to help him out with future ventures.
